Campers leave with a shareable link to a game they designed and coded themselves.

Pixel Quest is a side-scrolling platformer that campers design, draw, and code from scratch. Students start with an empty canvas and finish with a hero who runs, jumps, and collects their way through a level of their own making.

What students build

  • Platformer physics, with jump height and gravity tuned by hand
  • Original pixel art sprites, tiles, and background layers
  • Level design, collectibles, and a deploy to a live URL

Why it matters

Tuning a jump until it feels right teaches patience, precision, and the value of trying again. Campers make dozens of small decisions about art, pacing, and difficulty, then watch those choices show up in the finished game. They leave with a shareable link and proof that they can build something from nothing.

Has taught thousands of students to create with techology

James Colestock is the founder and camp director of WizCamp, where he helps kids and teens turn curiosity about technology into real, working projects. Over the past two decades he has taught thousands of students to code, build games, and design with AI, always starting from the same idea: learning sticks when it feels like play. When he isn't leading camps, he's prototyping new curriculum, tinkering with side projects, or talking shop with the instructors who make each session run.
